Is Black Walnut Flooring Worth the Price?
In my experience, absolutely—provided that Black Walnut is appropriate for the project and the homeowner understands the characteristics of the species.
American Black Walnut has a Janka hardness rating of approximately 1,010 pounds, compared with approximately 1,360 pounds for American Red Oak. Walnut is therefore somewhat softer than Oak.
That does not mean it is unsuitable for hardwood flooring.
Château Napoléon has produced and delivered hundreds of thousands of square feet of Walnut flooring over the years, with virtually no follow-up complaints regarding excessive damage.
Under normal residential conditions, a properly manufactured and maintained Black Walnut floor can perform beautifully for many years.
Its real attraction, however, is its appearance.
There is simply something extraordinary about the depth and movement that can be created in American Black Walnut, particularly when it is transformed through our oxidation techniques.
Solid Black Walnut Flooring vs. Engineered Walnut Flooring
Construction can also influence the cost of Black Walnut flooring.
Solid hardwood flooring is manufactured from a single piece of timber, while engineered flooring typically combines a genuine hardwood wear layer with a structurally designed core.
Neither construction should automatically be considered superior for every application.
The appropriate choice depends upon the project, installation environment, subfloor, dimensions, climate conditions, and architectural requirements.
For an important residence, these decisions should ideally be made as part of the overall flooring specification rather than simply by comparing prices online.
Does Wide Plank Black Walnut Flooring Cost More?
Wide plank flooring may command a higher price because producing wider boards requires appropriate raw material and careful selection.
But the visual difference can be substantial.
